This isn’t exactly recent news, just the first opportunity I’ve had to blog about it. Kayla got her driving permit in early May and she’s been logging hours behind the wheel. It’s been a bumpy ride being her instructor, at least initially. But she’s quickly getting the hang of it with only a few hiccups here and there.

During this phase of learning though, we try as much as possible to keep her away from bumper cars, slot car tracks and driving games on the Xbox. Actually, she’s pretty much done all three in the past few weeks. Uh oh!

As of the time of this posting, state law requires teens to carry their permit for a minimum of one year prior to applying for a driver’s license. Additionally, they must log a minimum number of hours behind the wheel with an authorized adult. If she passes her driving test when eligible, he could be licensed a few weeks before the end of her sophomore year. Congratulations on your rite of passage Kayla!

Nothing like going full throttle into the straightway in a souped up sports car. Especially when that car is 1/32 scale and powered by electricity.

Team Salazar takes to the raceway with the new family racer at a local Slot Car Speedway. We are fortunate enough to have one of the only commercial slot car tracks in the state right here in our home town.

Slot car racing isn’t something I did much of as a kid. I thought I could learn the ropes with my kids though since it’s something they might not get a chance to do again if I don’t. The track is frequented by several older “kids-at-heart”, empty nesters I assume since they don’t have kids with them. The business isn’t short of younger kids though since the owners have one of their own and his friends who come to race and help out during races.

So far, we’ve learned quite a bit, met some new friends and it’s already seeming like this is going to be a fun new hobby for all of us. If we can develop the fine trigger control and learn the subtleties of the track, we can probably even start to enter a few races for the “thrill of the race”. We’re looking forward to our next trip to the track.

July 27, 2010: The Salazar Family takes flight for the Lyons River Run in the beautiful mountain town of Lyons, Colorado. Past years have seen turnouts of over 500 participants on this picturesque running event. The energy of the crowd was palpable and the skies were clear and sunny on this gorgeous June morning. Finishing at sub-35min, sub-45 and sub-50 for running, run/walking and walking respectively, we each felt a sense of accomplishment and I expect this race will not be this family’s last. Way to go Salazar Family! You make me so proud!

The greatest blessing in my life was when this group chose to become a family.

They say Golf is a gentleman's sport. That didn't stop Anthony from swordfighting his sister with his club shortly after this photo was taken.

One sport the kids have had fun participating in is Frisbee Golf. We have a small collection of discs and we usually end up finishing the course with all of these discs still. Now I’m not saying that the kids and I haven’t had to go chest high in the water or climb some tall trees to recover them but we did end up with all of them in the end. These little discs aren’t cheap to replace so there’s that too.

Now that they seem to have a good concept of the game, I want them to take it to the next level. We went down to the local driving range to hit some golf balls. Even though neither of the kids have held a club before in their lives, they took to the basic concept and had a great time trying to align club to ball. Being an amateur golfer, I imparted the knowledge I’ve aquired to get them a base upon which to grow.

The girl has a natural inclination to positively crush the golf ball. I suspect she's pretending that the ball is her Algebra teacher.

We stayed there for a little more than an hour as the sun was setting over the Rockies. They made some great contact with some of their shots which made them very happy. They both expressed interest in coming back for some more practice and considered improving their skill enough to play a round. Not sure that will happen before the end of the summer but that will be the goal. The good thing is that you can play almost year round even here in Colorado.

We went to Rocky Mountain National Park this weekend for a little mountain adventuring. You take what you can get when you hike at any sort of elevation this time of year. On the Front Range (which is technically the land along the base of the foothills) the temperatures are more mild and the snow melts pretty quickly during March, April. We are still getting snow though and that means the mountains are getting it too. The temperatures there in the mountains, especially at night, are very cool and often cold enough to keep that snow good and cold. The valleys, and the trails we traveled through on our hike were slushy, wet and sometimes deep with snow. There was enough snow that one could easily use cross country skis, snowshoes or YakTrax to travel and we did see other hikers and evidence imprinted in the snow that these methods were being employed. Brave hikers as we were though, we decided that we didn’t need to bother with all of that and we set off on foot for about a 3.5 mile in and out exploration.

Still Frozen Over For Winter

Calypso Cascades, RMNP

The chosen path was the Wild Basin Trailhead. We didn’t go the whole route. We only went as far as the Calypso Cascades. The reason we didn’t do the whole route has more to due with the time of year and time of day being what they were. Time of day means that it was an early afternoon and winds can quickly go up and temperatures can go down very quickly so you don’t want to end up going back too far without lugging around a lot of extra supplies and clothing. Time of year is that the “Spring Thaw” isn’t really in full swing this high up. The typical summer destination on this route is the Ouzel Falls but without significant runoff, there isn’t really much to these falls. Just a frozen trickling wall of icepack. We already plan to come back with the flowers are in bloom and nature is waking from a winter slumber. For now, please enjoy these couple of camera phone pics until we get the stills off the digital camera to share.

Happy Hiking to any one of you blessed enough to have access to mother nature in all her splendor!

Kayla discovered a fondness for the Microsoft Powerpoint application and shows tremendous promise as a presenter right out of the gate. Animations, graphics, fades. She really put together an eye catching presentation for a school project. She then co-presented the content with her class and they all had a great time with it. She used an online version of Photoshop to edit a couple of the pictures and she does seem to have a knack for that as well. We may have a future marketing exec in our midst.
